Their Love of Music

Photography by Stephen Azzato
Foreword by Lester Holt, Newcaster & Musician

In Their Love of Music photographer Steve Azzato has captured the essence of the creative spirit in the faces and words of the musicians themselves. Featuring portraits of 117 artists, the book takes a slightly different approach to music photography than typically seen. “The beauty of this project for me was being able to sit with a huge range of musicians and explore what drew them to their art”, says Azzato. “I was able to hear it in their voices and record it visually in their images”. In the simple quiet of a green room, without the crowds or bandmates or tour managers, Azzato's photographs transcend the chaos of the stage and the intensity of the studio to reveal the inner spirit that drives each of his subjects. ABC News

About Their Love of Music

"Love the book....really found it to be wonderfully edited and covers many journeymen as well as established Chicago/scene musicians. I applaud you for finding the guys and gals that do not get the press or presence as a Corgan/Tweedy these days. They get the short end of the press and photo ops, but are essential to all bands and music communities."

- Joe Shanahan

Founder/Owner, Metro and Smart Bar

About Their Love of Music

"I agreed to write the foreword for Steve's book based on conversation and seeing some sample pictures from the concept. Having returned to my office to find a copy last week, my reaction was that it is amazing work and he should be proud! I'm very pleased to be a part of the project."

- Lester Holt

NBC Weekend Today Show anchor and author of the Foreword

About Their Love of Music

"I starting looking at the PDF of the book online last night, intending to just get a taste of it, and wound up going through all of it. It just pulls you in. The portraits are exceptional. There are quite a few artists I did not know. The photos and quotes make me curious to hear their music, too. Which is as it should be. Congratulations to Steve on an extremely impressive effort. I'll have to get me one."

About Lewis & Clark Trail

"The Lewis and Clark Trail: American Landscapes is a 256-page full-color slab of a book. It's a rapturous representation of the American landscape, seen both in grand wide-angle vistas and in the surfaces of wildflowers and water. It's a book that John Muir would've liked."

- Nicholas Day

The Chicago Reader

About Lewis & Clark Trail

"Richard Mack's ember photograph of the Missouri River at twilight gently moves off the page into your soul. I've never been absorbed by a photograph in a coffee table travel book as much as this spiritual picture in The Lewis & Clark Trail: American Landscapes."

- Dave Hoekstra

About Their Love of Music

"It is unlike anything I've ever seen and what I love about it is the fact that the portraits are just that...not on stage, not 'action' shots. And I also really like the fact that there are plenty of people I know and plenty of people I don't"

- Terry Stewart

President and CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum

About the Great Smoky Mountains Book

"I took some peaceful... thoughtful time with your book. Beyond the exquisite technical execution there is a profoundly sensitive eye... that is quite revealing of your self... and at the same time revealing you as a natural extension of the observation. To be able to reveal yourself to the world through the visual poetry of your craft is a beautiful and dare I say rare gift. I was...awed. "

- Jenni McClick

Manager Barnes & Noble

About Lewis & Clark Trail

"The scenes of fields, water, rocks, reflections and landscapes large and details small are mostly unpeopled and echo with what Lewis and Clark might have seen in their day. This is not a book to consume in one sitting. I found it best enjoyed and best contemplated in short segments."

- Steve Benoche

Managing Editor Ludington Daily News

About Their Love of Music

"I can't wait to bring it home and read it"

- John Farneda

Music Director WXRT

"Wow! You weren't kidding that is an awesome spread. And I don't even recognize maybe as many as half of those names. But it makes me want to know them just based on how many I did know. Dave Mason...awesome! Dave Brubeck...even awesomer! I loved seeing Nicholas Tremulus, Shemekia Copeland and all the other Chicago talent. Very cool guys!"

About the Great Smoky Mountains Book

"Richard has a sensitivity for light that's pretty rare. He can coax a richness out of landscapes and low light conditions that you don't see other photographers experiment with. His photographs have an emotional depth that is superior to a lot of other work. It's the best large format photography book we've ever been able to offer our visitors."

- Steve Kemp

Interpretive Products and Services Director
Great Smoky Mountains Association

About the Great Smoky Mountains Book

"As the name of his company, Quiet Light Publishing, suggests, these are photos that are serene, calming and photographed in beautiful, sometimes subtle light. One doesn't always shout "Wow!" with the exclamation mark immediately because of that innate quietness, but one might whisper a muted "wow" after soaking up a beauty like Sunrise, Newfound Gap, November 2008 or the gorgeous black and white, Cosby Creek, May 2006."

- Steve Begnoche

Managing Editor Ludington Daily News

About the Great Smoky Mountains Book

"Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Thirty Years of American Landscapes is all Mack's vision of the national park, which is a treasure worth preserving."

- J.T. Morand

"This may be the most beautiful of the many Lewis and Clark coffee table books published over the past few years.
