Starved Rock State Park, Utica, IllinoisStarved Rock, September 28-29, 2008 – offering 1 or 2 day trip This Workshop is now full - You can email us to be wait listed or for informatin on alternative Workshops. Starved Rock is best known for its fascinating rock formations, canyons and waterfalls. Canyons formed by glacial melt water and stream erosion slice through tree-covered sandstone bluffs for miles. Sparkling waterfalls are found at the heads of all 18 canyons, and vertical walls of moss-covered stone create a setting of natural geologic beauty uncommon in Illinois. Because of the sandstone composition, water can undercut a cliff, creating overhangs in the sandstone like Council Overhang in the park. It’s a spectacular sight! The porous sandstone bluffs allow water to soak quickly through, resulting in lush vegetation supporting an abundant wildlife and bird population. As you can see, the photo possibilities are endless! You’ll also learn about the long Native American history of the area.
